According to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, approximately 2 million bags are lost by airlines annually. Many of these bags end up in a warehouse in Scottsboro, Alabama, known for housing unclaimed luggage. This warehouse resells a third of the items and donates or recycles the rest. In addition to the inconvenience of lost bags, there’s also the issue of delayed or damaged luggage. A 2024 survey revealed a 10% increase in baggage mishandling, with many bags either delayed (77%) or damaged (18%).
Parker’s suggestion to avoid checked bags also saves money. For instance, American Airlines charges passengers for checked luggage on domestic flights. Checking a bag costs around £32 ($40), or £28 ($35) if booked online, while carry-on bags are free. However, a second carry-on bag can incur a fee of up to $45, depending on weight and size.
