Southeast Asian Games Gold Medalist Mervin Guarte Tragically Killed in Stabbing Incident

Mervin Guarte, a celebrated gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games, was tragically killed early Tuesday morning in a violent stabbing in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. The 32-year-old athlete, known for his remarkable achievements in obstacle course racing and track events, was fatally attacked while sleeping in a local barangay official’s home.

According to reports from Glen Juego on Super Radyo DzBB, Guarte was stabbed at approximately 4:30 a.m. by an unknown assailant who reportedly entered the house. Despite the brutal attack, Guarte was able to call for help before being rushed to the hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Guarte’s death has left the sports community in shock and mourning. Just last year, he clinched a gold medal at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, helping his team secure victory in the men’s team relay for obstacle course racing. This was not his first triumph on the international stage—Guarte also earned a gold in the 2019 SEA Games in the men’s 5km OCR, showcasing his strength and determination. Earlier in his career, Guarte had already established himself as a formidable competitor, securing two silver medals in the 2011 SEA Games in the 800m and 1500m track events. Additionally, he was part of the national 4x800m relay team that set a record with a time of 7:42.20 at the Vietnam Open in 2014.

Guarte, who served as a member of the Philippine Air Force, was stationed in Lipa, Batangas. His death marks a tragic loss not only for his family and teammates but also for the broader Philippine sports community.

The Philippine Sports Commission has expressed its deep condolences following the shocking loss, as tributes pour in for the athlete known for his perseverance, dedication, and contributions to the country’s sporting legacy.

The circumstances surrounding Guarte’s death remain under investigation, and the local police are working to uncover the identity of the person responsible for this senseless act of violence.
