Heartbreaking Final Moments of Kayaker with His Family Before His Disappearance

Heart-wrenching video footage has surfaced showing the final moments of kayaker Andrew McAuley with his loved ones before his tragic journey ended in disaster.

Andrew McAuley, an Australian mountaineer and sea kayaker, had set his sights on becoming the first solo kayaker to cross the treacherous Tasman Sea from Australia to New Zealand, a journey of over 1,000 miles.

At the age of 38, McAuley was no stranger to extreme adventures. He had summited peaks around the world, preferring to forge his own routes, and had completed several nonstop kayaking expeditions, including across the Bass Strait, where six sailors had lost their lives in a 1998 yacht race, and the Gulf of Carpentaria. He had even paddled more than 500 miles within the Antarctic Circle.

However, his attempt to tackle the Tasman Sea in 2007 ended in tragedy.

A devoted father, McAuley promised his wife and family that he would keep in touch throughout the journey, sharing photos and video updates. In one of his final videos, McAuley is heard expressing that he wanted the journey to be “over” as powerful storms battered his kayak, forcing him to lock himself inside to avoid drowning.

By the first week of February, Andrew told his wife, Vicki, that he expected to reach land in just a few days. However, he never made it.

His family grew increasingly concerned when the New Zealand Coast Guard reported a distress signal, deciphering the words “help” and “sinking.”

On February 10, McAuley’s empty, capsized kayak was found about 30 nautical miles (56 km) from his destination, with only his belongings, radio, and a crucial memory card recovered from the vessel.

The memory card provided vital clues, revealing McAuley’s last days alive. The final image taken by Andrew was a selfie of his face, covered in sunscreen, with a giant wave towering behind him as the sun set.

In addition, a heartbreaking video has resurfaced, showing Andrew’s final moments with his family before embarking on his journey. The footage, which was shared on Reddit, shows Andrew’s young son, Finlay, saying “bye, dad” as he prepares to leave. Before entering his kayak, Andrew says “bye bye, little buddy” to his son and kisses his wife goodbye.

The video then shifts to Andrew’s point of view from the kayak, several meters away from shore. He appears overcome with emotion as he breaks into uncontrollable tears. He whispers, “I love you—” while waving a final goodbye. Still visibly teary-eyed, Andrew turns back towards his mission and resumes paddling.

Though officially classified as missing and presumed dead, authorities believe Andrew drowned, possibly after falling asleep in his kayak.

After his disappearance, a film titled Solo was released, documenting his journey, while his widow, Vicki, wrote a book of the same name, reflecting on her late husband’s passion for extreme adventure.
